Innovative Wine Packaging Development
The Opportunity
Fetzer Vineyards came to PTI for a solution to increase the shelf life of their individually packaged glasses of wine. Zipz developed the wine glass and quickly launched it with Field Manufacturing producing the glasses. Prior to commercial launch, neither Zipz or Fetzer had done extensive shelf life testing. PTI tested the initial glasses to confirm poor oxygen barrier.
The Innovation
PTI consulted with all three companies to provide expertise in the package composition, filling line guidance, analytical testing, technical support, and helped to ensure excellent quality in filled packages. Analytical testing and technical support were utilized with Zipz, helping them deliver product & solutions quickly. PTI also provided plant support and technical support for Field Manufacturing.
A simulation model was utilized to predict the barrier composition necessary to achieve a one-year shelf life. The product team were well-versed of wine requirements, but needed help with bottles. The PTI team helped them create test procedures and recommended specs for oxygen performance. Plant support was also provided since the glass, as designed, presented difficulties in injection molding and the base PET material was critical to achieving the target shelf life.
The Outcome
Ultimately, PTI recommended a new PET material. The startup was completed and the packaging proved to sufficiently scavenge oxygen through filling line studies. This allowed Zipz to continue to market their packaging to other vineyards.
