Modular, food-grade rPET production system is now available in
Brazil; JVI appointed as licensed representative
Holland, Ohio (April 10, 2009) - A new modular system to produce Phoenix Technologies' LNOTMc food grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) resin is now available to the Brazil market.
For the past two years, LNOTMc resin has been produced for commercial use in the United States. More recently, a modular, low energy, small footprint system has been built as a response to increased global demand for post-consumer, food grade rPET for blow molding, injection molding and thermoforming applications. Holland, Ohio (April 10, 2009) - A new modular system to produce Phoenix Technologies' LNOTM c food grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) resin is now available to the Brazil market.
For the past two years, LNOTM c resin has been produced for commercial use in the United States. More recently, a modular, low energy, small footprint system has been built as a response to increased global demand for post-consumer, food grade rPET for blow molding, injection molding and thermoforming applications. The modular system is ideal for companies who want to quickly and easily incorporate commercially-proven rPET production into their own facilities.
JV Investimentos (JVI) has been licensed by Plastic Technologies, Inc., Holland, OH to represent the LNOTM c system in Brazil. PTI is Phoenix's sister company and is responsible for global licensing.
"We have chosen JVI as our Brazilian representative due to its extensive knowledge of PET. Additionally, JVI representatives have received comprehensive training on LNOTM c and the modular production system. This puts the company in an ideal position to help Brazilian processors and converters maximize the system’s benefits,” explained Steve Hawksworth, director of international business development, PTI.
The LNOTM c process relies on Phoenix's patented "extremely small particle size" technology. The tiny particle size enables much quicker decontamination (less than 1 vs. 4 hours) compared to other processes, resulting in faster output and significant energy savings. (The "c" in the brand name refers to the "compacted" resin that is the end result.)
LNOTM c technology produces rPET with superior color and yield as compared to other methods. Further, it has lower acetaldehyde levels which positively impact taste properties. Another benefit is its higher intrinsic viscosity (IV) or molecular weight which more closely matches the IV found in virgin resins. This enables higher package performance.
The resulting rPET is ideally suited for a variety of Brazilian food and beverage applications including water, carbonated soft drinks, juices, fruit, baked goods, meats and cheeses. Package types include bottles, thermoformed containers and films, as well as drinking cups, vegetable oil and deli containers.
"Color, yield and taste attributes have traditionally been stumbling blocks in producing viable rPET—particularly with very sensitive liquids, such as water. Our LNOPhoenix/PTI have teamed with Conair, Cranberry Township, PA, to build the modular LNOTM c processing equipment. This includes a grinder that converts rPET flake into extra small particle-size powder, a compactor to compress the powder in pellets and a standard resin dryer. The system requires a small foot print (less than 2,500 sq. ft.) and can easily be taken apart and transported to a new location, if desired.
"Our philosophy is that rPET supply is better suited to multiple, smaller, processing operations vs. one or two large capacity plants. We believe in a local 'consume, collect, convert' approach. By locating rPET production in closer proximity to resin users, you improve supply times and reduce the carbon footprint," Hawksworth explained.
